In 1980, Brazilian Metal exploded along with Punk and New Wave. Some groups sang in Portuguese and many others in English
to speak of Brazilian metal is to speak directly of Sepultura, Sarcofago, Korzus, however this day I will speak to you of the teachers of influential teachers for the already mentioned bands.

An extreme metal scene started developing in Brazil, eventually including bands such as Vulcano as well as bands like Sepultura and Sarcophagus that became much better known internationally in the 1990s. However, unlike the development of extreme metal scenes in Europe and the United States, Brazil's extreme metal scene did not develop out of much of an existing metal scene, so musicians of early bands like Vulcano had to build a network to promote and support their live performances from scratch. It was also difficult to acquire standard performing equipment. [3]

It was in this environment that Zhema Paul Magrão, Carli Cooper formed Vulcano in 1981. Due to their early date of formation, Vulcano was one of the first black metal / death metal bands in all of Latin America. Their first record "Om Pushne Namah", was released in 1983, and is different from most early extreme metal in that the lyrics were sung in Portuguese, not English. The release of this album also marks the departure of Jose Piloni (drums) from the band. In this early period, it was very difficult to secure live performances, and the band had to produce their own shows, and promotion was limited to pasting up posters, but Vulcano persevered, and moved forward in 1984 to release the demo Devil on My Roof .

Vulcano released a live recording Live! in 1985 to gain exposure to a greater audience outside of their home city of Santos. Live! was recorded in August in the city of Americana, without any mixing, and with a lineup of Zhema on bass, Soto Junior on guitar, Zé Flávio in guitar, drums and Lauder Piloni Angel on vocals. This served as preparation for Vulcano to record the first Brazilian black metal album Bloody Vengeance in 1986. In the years following the band released Anthropophagy (1987) and Who Are the True (1988). Throughout this period, Vulcano got access to more and better production as the metal scene in Brazil grew further. However, after releasing their fifth album Rat Race in 1990, Vulcano stopped releasing new albums for several years. In this period of reflection the Vulcano still did some live shows, but the only official release from the band was a Cogumelo Records compilation from 2000 with a re-release of the song "Bloody Vengeance".

The story of REINCARNATION could easily summarize the past, present and future of Metal in Colombia. Founded in 1984 in Medellín, at a time when Extreme Metal was in its embryonic stage, REENCARNACIÓN combined elements of Punk, Hardcore and Metal in its original musical proposal in an amalgam known as "Ultra Metal", a term nebulous with what was called any band that played heavier than the Swiss HELLHAMMER or Swedes BATHORY, in the days when Metal did not suffer from the unnecessary labels and innumerable stylistic ramifications that plague this genre of Rock. Although similar bands existed at that time (PARABELLUM being the indisputable pioneers of that cavernous and wild sound), the advantage of REENCARNACIÓN over its congeners was that they recorded what they did. From the beginning of Victor in a band called PROPHECY in 1984, transforming into REINCARNATION in 1986, the reception of his first demo, "Dioses Muertos" of 1987, prompted them to get into a recording studio, with everything precarious that was in those days record rock in Colombia, without someone who even knew how to do it, with a shortage of techniques and equipment that, despite all the circumstances, would have an impact that has stood the test of time.

What of all that lived and experienced at that time, was what prompted him to make those first musical sketches with REINCARNATION?  la historia de REENCARNACIÓN podría fácilmente resumir el pasado, presente y futuro del Metal en Colombia. Fundada en 1984 en Medellín, en una época en la que el Metal Extremo estaba en su etapa embrionaria, REENCARNACIÓN combinó en su propuesta musical inicial elementos del Punk, el Hardcore y el Metal en una amalgama conocida entonces como “Ultra Metal”, un término nebuloso con el que se denominaba a cualquier banda que tocara más pesado que los suizos HELLHAMMER o los suecos BATHORY, en los días en los que el Metal no sufría de las innecesarias etiquetas e innumerables ramificaciones estilísticas que plagan este género del Rock. Aunque por entonces existían bandas similares (siendo PARABELLUM los indiscutibles pioneros de ese sonido cavernoso y salvaje) la ventaja de REENCARNACIÓN sobre sus congéneres fue que ellos sí grababan lo que hacían. Desde los comienzos de Víctor en una banda llamada PROFECÍA en 1984, transformándose en REENCARNACIÓN en 1986,  la acogida de su primer demo, “Dioses Muertos” de 1987, les impulsó a meterse a un estudio de grabación, con todo lo precario que era en aquellos días grabar rock en Colombia, sin alguien que supiera siquiera cómo hacerlo, con una escasez de técnicas y equipos que, pese a todas las circunstancias, tendría un impacto que ha superado la prueba del tiempo.

¿Qué de todo lo que vivía y se experimentaba en ese tiempo, fue lo que lo impulsó a hacer esos primeros esbozos musicales con REENCARNACIÓN? “Escuchar a PARABELLUM” responde y después de una breve pausa y una risa contenida, voltea la cabeza, me dirige una mirada inquisitiva, agregando socarronamente, “¿Tengo que hablar más?”  Y para contextualizar la respuesta, prosigue: “Me marcó mucho en el sentido del Metal. En esos momentos yo acababa de ingresar a PROFECÍA como vocalista, y lo que compuse como un tema ya terminado, que considero fue mi primer tema, fue ‘Reencarnación de la Luna’. Se grabó ese tema y, en ese momento, dije ‘Esto que estoy haciendo se va a llamar REENCARNACIÓN’. Pero lo que me dio la fuerza de decir ‘Esto es lo que yo quiero hacer’ fue PARABELLUM”.

Thanks to the postal mail of the eighties and the poorly recorded demos, the primitive metal of Medellín was spread like a plague abroad. The raw and chaotic sound that could only come from a country consumed by war, impressed the European rockers who from the comfort of the first world tried to talk about a violence they did not know. The dirty and aggressive atmosphere of bands like Reencarnación and Parabellum formed a unique subgenre of heavy music, a missing link between heavy metal and extreme metal known as ultra metal. A sound created by young and empirical musicians who did not know what the hell they were doing and who, unintentionally, entered the purest circles of the eighties metal and with their songs made to the brave they influenced the parents of one of the most radical movements and Controversies of extreme music: Norwegian black metal.

Inspired by others like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Motorhead, during the eighties the bands that formed the different subgenres of metal were born. Groups like Metallica, Slayer, Venom, Possessed and Morbid Angel began to spread and create a series of new sounds, faster, darker and heavier than the heavy metal and hard rock that preceded them, which shaped the thrash, death and black metal. Something that adjusted very well to the marginal reality of many young people of Medellin who, inspired by these new movements, also put themselves on guard.

Between 1982 and 1987, bands like Mierda, Reencarnación, Astaroth and Sacrilegio began to form the Colombian underground metal scene, a move that started in a very intuitive way, with groups of young people who hardly knew how to hold their rustic instruments, some even made by facts same, and in the same humble areas of Medellin that would be the breeding ground for the bloodiest of the urban drug trafficking fronts. In this creole and primitive metal, these pelados found a way to vent the anger and frustration of growing up without a future in the bowels of a society that marginalized them.

Of all the groups of that time the most legendary are Reincarnation and Parabellum. Led by Víctor Raúl Jaramillo (Piolin), Reencarnación was one of the first Colombian metal bands that he was not afraid to experiment. This is demonstrated by songs such as 888 metal, to which they put a violin and a classical guitar, or in Funeral del norte where they mix thrash heavy parts with the chaos and speed of the grind. Although their first records were recorded in an artisanal way, they achieved a very coarse and heavy sound that showed that with crooked guitars you can make good metal

Salem, the first extreme metal band in Israel, was formed in 1985, under the name Axe Metal, and is thus one of the first bands in the worldwide underground metal scene to play brutal black metal. This can be heard in their self-titled rehearsal tape from 1986 and their live demo Destruction Till Death from 1987, recorded at the legendary 'Penguin' club, the only outlet for alternative music in Israel throughout the 1980s. This formula was later perfected by bands such as Beherit and Blasphemy in the early 1990s.
Salem's music is a combination of doom/death metal (slow-paced death metal) with oriental elements and high-pitched screaming-vocals (distorted hoarse screams). Riffing, henceforth, can range from slow and heavy doom metal riffing to very fast and rapid death metal riffing. This sound evolved from Salem's original style (first two demos), which was old-school black metal. Salem's latest two studio albums are much heavier than their former LP's.
